So, to preface, I am someone who has not been to a lot of concerts due to one reason or another. But one week, I decided to spice things up in life and buy some tickets to a concert for a musical act I have only heard a bit about: Weatherday. Of course, I did a bit of research and listened to the album that Sputnik is touring in their Hornet Disaster Tour...uh Hornet Disaster. And before we get into the real meat of the concert review, I'd like to give a few words to the album itself (which fun fact: got the vinyl record for. Best impulsive buy I have done so far in my life).

So...quick review. I really liked Hornet Disaster. Weatherday makes this noisy shoegazey sound sound so hypnotizing it becomes psychedelic. I have become a big fan of this "wall of noise" sound as of late and Sputnik and co make it work through 19 tracks and nearly 90 minutes of runtime. Sputnik's vocals are also just as screamy and soft as they need to be. It reminded me a lot of stuff from Parannoul and a bit of Asian Glow, specifically. Except again a bit of a more intense take. Super fun to be more and more ingrained in the underground music scene. Sure, not everything is going to stick, because it is just so much music packed into one collection, but the fact that you can just listen to the album the whole way through and just enjoy the vibes is good enough for me. Soooooooo...7.8/10.

Again, for fans of Parannoul, Asian Glow, Xiu Xiu, Glass Beach, and Car Seat Headrest

So unto concert shenanigans! So walking into Club Congress, I completely forgot that I had been here once to support a local band that I had known personally a few months back: Tonight's Sunshine. The venue had a cool stage decor and had a huge space for raves and stuff. If I didn't absolutely abhor small spaces with a huge amount of people smushed into it with them trying to shake ass, I would rave there. Me and a couple friends ran a bit late and missed a bit of the first opener's set. Weekend Lovers was a pretty decent enough band to start the night off. The music was decent indie rock. I really liked that one of the bandmembers was a big enough fan of the 2024 film "The Substance" that not only was he wearing a Substance T-shirt, but he made a shoutout as well. We love our cinephiles. There was one song that had me bopping my head, where the riff was super fun and enticing. Super solid performance.

After Weekend Lovers, we got New Misphoria, a local AZ band that was the second opener of the show. Besides Tonight's Sunshine, this is another local Tucson band that I hear a lot about, but it is one that I have heard the most from (other than TS of course) as I listened to their debut EP, "I'll Tell You When You Get Older" and absolutely loved it. And after having the pleasure of seeing them live, I think that it is pretty safe to say that I am a new fan of this duo. A Jinx from Arcane-looking drummer and a very extravagant and theatrical performer in the singer/guitarist, it became hard to not be enraptured by the performance. Songs like "Acronym" and "Pleasantville" straight from the EP sounded so good live. Encouragement from the singer themself to get vibey on the dancefloor was motivating as well. Even songs I wasn't familiar with like the closer of the set "Mercy Killing (Hit Me With Your Car)" had the whole audience floating and barely being able to come back down to the ground. Also the lighting was another standout from what an outstanding opening act. Arguably, the performance that nearly stole the night. Would love for them to get some more mainstream success.

And now...to the headliner of the show. After the amazing performance from New Misphoria, I was very excited to see how Weatherday was going to follow that up...and then things started to break. After only the first song from the set, Sputnik's guitar string broke and suddenly, there were chants from people yelling "SPARE GUITAR" repeatedly into the night. Unfortunately, this would not be the only interruption. From broken drumsticks to smoking amp speakers, Sputnik said it perfectly when they said "it's such a bad omen when the instrument starts to break". But man, were all the sudden interruptions and constant shouting from the other concertgoers so worth getting through to hear these people play. Songs like "Angel" and "Radar Ballet" and even songs from the debut LP "Come In" were played as well and my god, was it just euphoric and enchanting. Just as much so as just simply listening on the headphones. The crowd became ravenous to the point that I was able to get past the huge moshpit that started moving towards the front of the stage and I was able to move swiftly to the stage close enough to be right near the action but far away enough to not be hit and pushed by my fellow peers. Utterly magical. I may have went a lil deaf at the end, but dammit it was worth it. I even got to meet Sputnik and take a pic with them and they were just super wonderful to chat with for a short period of time.

After this, concerts may be something I want to start going to more often. For awhile, I found myself turned off by the crowds and the loud music. Sensory overload took control and left me feeling more resentful towards these sort of events than loving them. But the more I listen to music and enjoy it, the more I start to want to hear these songs performed live. To more concert reviews from DJ Hugonius ZZer!
