Preface
Thank you so much to Droll for giving us press to this show! I had such a great time and I'm truly humbled by your kindness and willingness to talk to me and for going through all sorts of trouble to make this a great experience. I really look forward to your future endeavors and I can't wait to see what you do next!!!
- Lamley Andrews
It was a cold and rainy Sunday night. My friend and I scurried from the Centro parking garage and sought refuge in the warm and cozy Club Congress lobby. After stumbling about to find the entrance, we made it into the venue. Club Congress was adorned in fall decorum and skeletal attendees floated about. My friend and I lingered by the merch booth. A CRT TV stood alone at the end of the booth. My friend and I poked at it but neither of us are gaming masters.
After failing miserably at Spyro, our attention was directed towards the first act : Female Gaze
I was pleasantly surprised to see this band as I was familiar with some of the members. Nicky of Spank was on drums, and I've seen Emily (on keys) do her own solo projects too. I was intrigued by the line up since some of the members hail from wildly different genres. This dream team melded into a beautiful bedroom pop - bedroom folk explosion! They all demonstrated such a beautiful synergy between each other that truly translated into the music. It was deep and rich - almost like molasses. The audience really sank in and out to the ebb and flow of their musical genius.
Also, congratulations to Nelene (pictured above) on her baby! I wish you well!
Following Female Gaze was New Misphoria.
I was not too familiar with this band however, they seem to have a serious cult following in Tucson. I never heard of them until my sedimentology professor mentioned them. She said that they're really outside for the mainstream and that their performances are electric. After seeing them I can say my professor was SPOT ON! They immediately blew across the stage with an explosion of sound! I was enamored by their indie-rock-folk sound. I loved the billowing yodels from Lee (red cowboy hat). This is a new revolutionary sound and I can't wait for their influence to grow!
Finally, for the headline act Droll!
There was an immediate change of energy once the set started to roll out for Droll. The room instantly became packed to the gills and there was a droning buzz among the crowd.
Each of the members rolled out one by one, the spiritual pressure of the room increased tenfold.
The room literally shook from their sheer aura.
I was familiar with their work - especially with their release of Droll however, I feel like this performance really cemented my passion for their work. From the dreamy guitars to the to the raging vocals, it really was the everything bagel with extra cream cheese of music! I really am at a loss of words, so I'll just let my pictures and video speak for me.
They played virtually their entire discography, which was so cool to see! I really like hearing music live because I feel like the addition of the human component really makes everything sound so much better! I hung around till the end to get this impromptu interview!
It wouldn't be a review without Merch
The merch selection was absolutley wild at this show!
I literally spent so much money (it's okay money comes and goes)
From Female Gaze I got a cassette which came with a free sticker!
From New Misphoria I got a tie and some stickers.
Thanks to Lee for picking out such a fun color!
Also, my professor loved the stickers you gave her!
From Droll, I bought a shirt and a cassette. They also gave me free stickers and a promotional keychain that RIFD scans to open up to their music on spotify!
The shirts are super thick and comfortable! They were made right here in Arizona by @sidewalk___chawk on IG! Here's a link to his stuff: https://www.instagram.com/sidewalk___chawk/
Overall, I'd give this concert an 11/10! It was the best Sunday night ever!
