Description:
As an OG (and by OG I mean before Mamma Mia got trendy) fan of ABBA, I was shocked and slightly confused by this sudden release of new music from the band, since I was under the impression that they were no longer creating music. However, here we are, with two new songs from ABBA and I have some opinions.
They released the album as a single, however it is two separate songs with very different vibes. In my opinion “I Still Have Faith in You” sort of feels like I’m in a Disney movie and something really upsetting happened however it is an easily resolved problem and a little overdramatic.
It simply does not scratch the itch in my brain that I want ABBA music to scratch. I’m not saying ABBA shouldn’t release slow music, “Slipping Through My Fingers” is one of my favorite ABBA songs, but for some reason this new release was more of a miss for me. (5/10)
So I started off a little disappointed, and with only one new song left I grew a little concerned. As I listened to their next new song “Don’t Shut Me Down”, I hoped for a hit, and…. dramatic pause.... they delivered!
This song is a power move, and feels like other classic ABBA hits. This 2021 release feels like a time machine to the 70’s and 80’s vibes we love from ABBA. I genuinely could see myself driving with all the windows down listening to this song and just purely vibing. (8.5/10)
Overall I still adore ABBA and I am curious if more music will be released from them in the future. Would recommend giving both songs a listen just for kicks, but definitely “Don’t Shut Me Down”.
