Description:

Cyrille Aimee is a French Jazz singer from Fontainebleu, France. She is out with her new album “Move On: A Sondheim Adventure” and it is something. Honestly, I don’t hate it… but I don’t love it. I don’t really want to listen to it again. This is the kind of music that would be fun to hear in a restaurant or jazz lounge because it is a recognizable song but not one personally seeks out. Not to tear it apart but I don’t think her voice matches the power that Sondheim songs usually have. She turns them into a slower jauntier jazzy version of themselves and it doesn’t always work. This is not to say that all the songs didn’t work, but you kind of had to think of them as a new song rather than compare them to the original. Being Alive was kind of ruined for me because she put a samba rhythm behind it, even though it is supposed to be an emotional realization in a Broadway play. I did like a lot of the other songs instrumental parts but some didn’t fit. Overall, it was ok but maybe pick someone other than Sondheim to cover?

Sounds Like: Oridano Gypsy Jazz Band

Recommended Tracks:

  1. 5- Marry Me a Little: guitar and changing pace

  2. 10- No One is Alone: from Into the Woods, love the music behind it, actually shows some vocal chops
