Lana Del Rey's new single, Did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean, is a melodic, orchestral, and hauntingly beautiful song that makes that album something to look forward to in 2023. Starting in early summer, I heard rumors that Lana was going to be releasing more music. Hearing this I was ecstatic because I had regressed back into my Lana era. Listening to Ultraviolence, Lust for Life, Born to Die, and Norman F***ing Rockwell on repeat. As well as some songs from all of her other albums. I was disappointed when the summer ended and I had not heard anything new besides her collaboration with Father John Misty, "Buddy's Rendezvous". Safe to say, I was very excited to hear she was coming out with an album.
Although we only have a single to go off of right now, it is definitely setting the expectation high for the album. The song itself is very orchestral, and I love that. Lana's voice is beautiful and haunting, smooth and strong. The production for the song is amazing and when you listen to it with earbuds, you really feel immersed in the song. This single has a nice build up before you reach the climax of the song, and once you get to the peak of the song, you will be crying and singing along. It is one of those Lana songs you just want to belt while driving on the highway.
The single has been described as poetic, orchestral, nostalgic, and warm. I think the single is meeting these descriptors, so my hope is the album will be the same way. Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd is incredibly nostalgic as well. Listening to it, I felt influences from Blue Banisters, mostly because of the vocals and Lana's sound. I think the use of orchestra was also a bit nostalgic of her Born to Die album, but it was much softer than in B2D. Overall, I loved the single and I am looking forward to the full album. I am hoping Lana will not disappoint, and until the album is out I will have this song on repeat. Reviewer’s Name: Therese Peralta Date of Review: 12/08/2022
