Elusive Obscure Shoegaze from the 90's

Album: stars for our ceiling

Artist: Beatrice Blinded

Release Date: April 14, 2025

Description:

Ithaca’s dream pop/shoegaze quintet from the 90’s reissues in the big year of 2025, in thanks to Daydream Records. Beatrice Blinded was a quant independent band from the college town of Ithaca, NY, who to my knowledge has only released a single and a split EP. Those being Two Days Wide / Disappear released by Mallbunny Records in 1994, and The More You Eat The Better You Are Volume One by Cash Cow also in 1994.

Two Days Wide / Disappear

The More You Eat The Better You Are Volume One

I got my first taste of Beatrice Blinded’s music from a zip file on the Daydream Records discord, featuring “Disappear”, “Doubt”, “Two Days Wide”, and I was instantly hooked. After having those same three tracks on loop for a few hours, my hunger could not be satiated and I needed more, so I was just frantically searching for any crumbs of Beatrice Blinded’s discography available online. In my search I found Brian Pavlovitz’s SoundCloud page where he uploaded “Two Days Wide” over 6 years ago, where it only has 5 likes (one being myself). Though this track has since been removed, likely due to having a Bandcamp page for their music now. I also found a wonderful music blog post from 2023 which has a short blurb about the band and a zip file of only “Disappear” and “Two Days Wide”. Massive shoutout to the Wilfully Obscure music blog, love your stuff. The last crumb I was able to find was a YouTube video from 2014 that had “Further” from the split EP, albeit the quality was what you would expect.

Numero Group wishes they had Beatrice Blinded (this is not a diss, I still love you Numero), but we can thank Daydream Records, a small DIY label from San Diego, CA, for this reissue. There will be three variants available for preorder on April 18th for this one time pressing, so get it while you can. I’m also hoping for a possible future cassette release, maybe if the vinyl sells well.

Beatrice Blinded’s sound reminds me of some indie-emo bands that I listen to, despite not technically fitting into that music genre with their more dream pop lean. So take this with a grain of salt. I would say if you like these songs, you’ll like Beatrice Blinded’s music.

  • “Cover Letter” by Dahlia Seed

  • “Past, Present, What Should Have Been” by Nymb

  • “Sometimes Memory Fails Me Sometimes” by Everyone Asked About You

  • “Everybody’s Talkin” by Moose

  • “Say It In Words” by M.I.J.

Honestly it’s kind of hard for me to place their exact sound, but if you happen to find anything you should share it with the class (me please). Also if there is anything else in the archive, my hands are right here. I’ll take whatever crumbs I can get.

Daydream Records is a passion project that recently had some hardships after the pressing plant filed for bankruptcy and took over 10K in production fees and there doesn’t seem to be any way to recoup those losses. So consider donating to their GoFundMe so that they continue, or purchase something from their website.
